HIGHLIGHTS
Ÿ P.E.E.R. Sharing...People Everywhere Eating in Restaurants...is a new, simple idea for the public and restaurant owner to work together to save restaurant food before reaching the customer’s plate and to redistribute some of it to help the hungry.
Ÿ This new saved restaurant food source can be directed exclusively to the local Community, or some for the local community and a portion allocated to other regional communities in greater need, and perhaps also for national and international use.
Ÿ Flexibility of ‘Regular Menu Choice’ and ‘P.E.E.R. Sharing Choice’ is important to allow restaurant owner and customer the choice to maintain status quo or choose our new, less food-same price, help method.
Ÿ Customer wins by contributing some food to help the less fortunate which otherwise may have been wasted on the plate, or caused them to be too full.
Ÿ The hungry win by having this new community support source of food.
Ÿ Restaurant owner’s participation is positive, gaining PR and community recognition without making cash sacrifices or added expenses of delivering the saved food.
Ÿ P.E.E.R. Sharing food saving portion of approximately ¼ to 1/3 is flexible to allow simple, easy to understand and follow process by restaurant cooks/management.
Ÿ Pickup and delivery of the saved food from restaurants can be done by church/civic, community groups.
Ÿ Conservative, controlled plan to test-market P.E.E.R. Sharing before expansion.
Ÿ This Plan has the potential to grow within the test-market community, across the U.S., North America, and indeed worldwide to become a major food aid source of solving the hunger problem.
Ÿ P.E.E.R. Sharing win-win-win situation will attract positive media attention for everyone participating.
“P.E.E.R. SHARING”
One of the chronic world problems is hunger. Not only does hunger continue to wreak havoc on people in those far away, foreign countries, but right here in the United States and Canada an alarming number of our fellow humans are going hungry despite food stamps and other safety nets. Cyclical recessions only add to the demand on our burdened government and institutions to meet the growing hunger dilemma. For those of us who are blessed with abundance we may not understand, or perhaps even fully appreciate the problem, although we continue to give food to the food banks and money to charitable organizations such as the Salvation Army, etc. In a world gone mad in many ways, one can hardly be blamed for recalling Charles Dickens’, “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times”.
Although I have no current Gallup poll to support my point, I believe you will agree that given the opportunity, many of us privileged people would gladly help the hungry even more, particularly if a simple relatively “painless” opportunity existed. Support for Food Banks certainly illustrates this point. Currently, with worldwide economic uncertainties, soliciting cash for this major cause is far more difficult, but if an additional new plan can be created which allows the average person to contribute directly to food aid in a non cash method, major benefits in solving this hunger problem can occur.
The creative challenge then is to construct an idea that allows for a new, easy to use, non cash public participation food air contribution. An idea which may even be fun as it brings out the best in people while they provide a new source of food to the hungry, area by area, all across North America, and indeed, around world. Such an idea could become so powerful that its implementation would MAKE A DIFFERENCE, now and forever, in conquering hunger.
THE IDEA
Like many people, I have on a number of occasions been in a restaurant, locally or while traveling on vacation or business, ordered the food and later could not finish the full meal. Whether it was guilt or not, I felt badly and, in fact, sometimes even lectured other family members that hungry people would love to have the leftovers on our plates. On the way out of the restaurant you realize that you are not alone in leaving leftover, wasted food. Millions of restaurants worldwide throw out incredible amounts of food abandoned on their customers’ plates, day in and day out, all year round. Unfortunately, it isn’t feasible to reclaim and distribute wasted food to give to the hungry people in our area. Or is it?
Yes, there is a new idea to SAVE a significant amount of the now daily wasted food from the five million plus restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, and redistribute it to the hungry. In fact, this simple idea will work in all restaurants around the world. It’s called “P.E.E.R. SHARING” (P.E.E.R for People Everywhere Eating in Restaurants). It’s based upon the idea of saving the food before it goes on the customer’s plate.
Here’s how it will work! Every participating RESTAURANT will offer its customers two distinct CHOICES of ordering from their menu. One “REGULAR” designated column and one new “P.E.E.R. SHARING” choice. The restaurant menu food choice remains unchanged, but the customer can select from either the regular or “P.E.E.R. Helping” order category. “REGULAR” means the normal portion of food at the regular price - the status quo - just like everyday business as it exists today. The “P.E.E.R. Sharing” choice means approximately one-quarter or one-third less food portion for the customer, still at the regular price. For Example: a three egg omelet priced at $7.95 would be status quo for “REGULAR”, but for “P.E.E.R. Sharing” the customer would get a two egg omelet - one- third less food for the same price. The customer gets a little less food and, following our omelet example, the unused egg is saved BEFORE it reaches the customer, and it is added to the other “P.E.E.R Sharing” food being dedicated and donated, hour by hour, all day at the restaurant. All of the allocated, uncooked saved food will then be distributed to the hungry. One egg soon becomes a dozen then several dozen, one piece of bread soon becomes a loaf, one slice of bacon becomes a pound, and one day’s food from just one restaurant soon becomes a measurable difference. Add lunch and dinner and multiply this by thousands, then millions of restaurants, and soon “P.E.E.R. Sharing” will become a wave of positive action, hope for the less fortunate.
The stockpile of saved daily food in each restaurant could end up being given directly to the homeless in the local community, or to the Salvation Army, Second Harvest or to other appropriate existing organizations such as church groups or the Food Banks in the home area of the restaurant(s) for distribution. Another source for distribution of the restaurant food could be Civic groups such as Jaycees and the Kiwanis Club. The “P.E.E.R. Sharing” food aid could be distributed entirely in the local community where it is donated and/or, if a storage and transportation system can be structured, some food could be assigned to other more needy areas of the state, country and/or maybe one day to the UNITED NATIONS’ WORLD FOOD PROGRAM organization to help feed the hungry in foreign countries as well. But right now our focus is participating communities in America.
It’s important to note that under this new food aid plan the restaurant owner doesn’t lose, he/she still receives the full amount of money for each “P.E.E.R. Sharing” choice order. This is important because to attract restaurants to participate a concern will be raised about restaurants losing money, or even the necessity of policing the restaurants to be sure the donated food is actually passed on by the restaurants. Discussions with an owner of several restaurants here indicated that between 10 to 20% of the designated food supply may be lost to some unethical restaurant owners, but that it will likely be offset by an equal amount of extra food supplied by some restaurant owners who will donate a portion of their own food in addition to the customers’ contribution. The bottom line is that a new source of otherwise wasted food will be redirected to help people who need it!
During my meeting with the restaurant owner/association executive he advised that, in his opinion, restaurant owners will want to participate in “P.E.E.R. Sharing”, the key is not to expect the owner to distribute/deliver the saved food, and to keep the instructions for their participation simple. Again, this is why linkage with Church and Civic groups who can provide the manpower for picking up the food and delivering it to the appropriate source is important.
Following that one-egg-at-breakfast being saved example through the “P.E.E.R SHARING” system, I think you can see that if only thirty percent of the people in the United States and Canada eating in restaurants each morning participate an impressive amount of eggs will be happily SAVED AND DIVERTED TO FEED OUR HUNGRY. And then think of the supply of bread, bacon, coffee, sugar, fruit, potatoes, etc., which would also be happily allocated to help the hungry in this win-win-win situation. Multiply this new BREAKFAST food source by three via the larger supply sources from the daily LUNCHES and DINNERS - meat, potatoes, bread, milk, sugar, flour, rice, butter, beverages, vegetables, fruit, etc., all saved before being cooked and sent out to the customer’s table and wasted - and redistributed to benefit the needy - and you can begin to see the enormous pool of food that will be created 24/7. It’s important to note that in the “P.E.E.R. Sharing” restaurant menu choice category, the goal is to reclaim between one-quarter and one-third of the food. However, no exact measurement will be required by the restaurant. Flexibility is important for the success of this program.
As I mentioned, there are approximately FIVE MILLION SIT DOWN RESTAURANTS IN NORTH AMERICA - this enormous customer participation food source will generate a TREMENDOUS NEW FOOD FLOW EVERYDAY, all year-round. This idea CAN make a difference…with your support!
Yes, PEOPLE EVERYWHERE EATING IN RESTAURANTS is an innovative simple idea which, if properly developed and implemented, could make a big, positive contribution towards helping the chronic problem of hunger around the world. And, as mentioned, it’s a win-win-win situation - the hungry benefit, the restaurateur feels good about being a positive influence in their community without losing money, and the customer sees a way that the otherwise “wasted” food on his or her place can actually be saved and donated to hungry people without having to make a cash donation.
CORPORATIONS could join in this force for good by encouraging their employees who have business meals to select the “P.E.E.R. Sharing” menu choice. And for those individuals who travel and eat out a lot, there is a happy alternative solution to being stuffed, wasting food on a plate, and feeling guilty about the less fortunate hungry people (“but there for the grace of God, go I”).
We all can be part of a new movement - a mission of People Everywhere Eating in Restaurants Sharing. Just say PS
The next step for this nonprofit operation idea is the R&D test-market phase which is critical to prove the viability of the “P.E.E.R. Sharing” plan, including resolving any problems in its implementation prior to rolling out the program to communities across America, Canada and abroad. And, to attract partners. I estimate that this importanttest-market phase will take approximately one year to achieve. I will select Los Angeles as the pilot model city (county) because it offers an excellent R&D venue with the diversity of restaurants to select from, the proven local sense of community and the financial stability, as well as an important tourism population to make the pilot study work effectively. It’s possible to do the test market in other cities depending upon the partner(s) interests. A web site using the PeerSharing.org domain will also be built.
This important test-market phase will essentially involve a full-time commitment by me, and also my wife, Lorrie, who works with me in the research and administrative areas. We will move to L.A. to execute this test period phase.
Once the R&D test work is done in Los Angeles, I intend to use my media experience and contacts with high profile celebrities to attract spokespersons-Hollywood stars, sports figures, politicians and industry leaders to promote the success of the “P.E.E.R. Sharing” program, via PSA’s for television, film, the net and major events in the U.S., Canada and abroad . Social media will be a major exposure tool for our mission.
I believe that the large institutions, and private industry food related corporations, e.g. Coke, McDonald’s, Kraft, P&G, etc., will then want to sponsor the roll-out implementation and ongoing costs to run “P.E.E.R. Sharing” on a national and international basis, once the positive test-market results are available, and particularly when it is reported in the media. And, as mentioned I have strong relationships with the media and entertainment arena.
P.E.E.R. Sharing is a simple idea, an idea whose time has come, and it can make a difference for the hungry in every community. I am seeking an active Sponsor to work with me in this next test market phase. Thank you.
